June 18th is Seattle chapter’s International Surfing Day event. As we obviously don’t have surf in the city, we will be having a stand up paddleboarding race on Lake Union. You can show up in a swimsuit, try out a board, or even join the race on the spot! Urban Surf will be our event host, at 2100 North Northlake Way. The event is free and open to the public; it starts at 5:30PM and goes til 8PM. Kids SUP race is at 6:15, adults SUP race at 7:15, arrive 30 minutes before to register. Check out the Facebook event page to see a few other faces you might recognize that will be there tonight!
There will be local brew, and as always, an excellent raffle (bring small bills to buy raffle tickets). Proceeds benefit the chapter and our Hold On To Your Butts campaign. This event is for everyone, young and old, members and non-members. Come take photos, post them to your instagram with #ISD14 and #myspecialplace and enter to win a national contest. Hope to see you there!

Can we protect our favorite beaches for future generations? Yes, we can! We have launched our Recreational Use Survey and we couldn’t be more excited to share this opportunity to shape our shorelines with you. The goal of this survey is to find the dollar value of coastal recreation to our state as well as document prominent locations of coastal recreation; this spatial data is needed as Washington state, coastal tribal nations, and collaborating federal agencies move forward with a process called marine spatial planning. A similar study by Surfrider Foundation in Oregon found that four million permanent residents take 27 million individual trips to the coast annually and spend about $2.4 billion on the Oregon coast. This is impressive data that gives recreation a voice in coastal planning, but to gather that information we need your help. This survey is for all of Washington’s coastal beach-goers- paddlers, surfers, divers, sand-castle builders- if you enjoy the beaches, then we want you to take the survey HERE and then pass it on to your friends!
Learn more about the survey at: http://washington.surfrider.org/rec-use/
Our pals at Zeeks in Ravenna got a bit too excited about all the good stuff happening in Seattle right now and double booked the chapter meeting. But we’re not ones to hold a grudge so we will be having the Chapter meeting at the same time, 6:45, on Tuesday, May 20th at Zeeks Pizza in Greenlake located at 7900 East Green Lake Dr N. So Zeeks in Greenlake NOT Zeeks in Ravenna. Sorry for the extra email and this change of location. The same good stuff such as summer events and updates on local programs and campaigns will still be happening!
