Break up with Plastics Virtual Event - Feb. 16

In this legislative session, we want Washington to break up with plastics. Join us for a special free screening of the documentary, The Story of Plastic, followed by a Break Up with Plastics panel at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, February 16th to discuss an exciting effort underway in Washington to tackle plastic pollution.

The Story of Plastic brings into focus an alarming, man-made crisis and the heroes who are working every day to rise up against big plastic. After watching the film, we will come together to discuss how Washington can tackle plastic pollution. You'll also have an opportunity to make your voice heard.

February Chapter Meeting - Feb. 18

Revealing the invisible: exploring coastal climate change impacts through bivalve shellfish.

Join us on Thursday, February 18 at 6:30 pm for our February Chapter Meeting alongside our guest speaker, and former Chair, Call Nichols. Call will present his recent work with the Shellfish Growers Climate Coalition "Revealing the Invisible: Exploring Coastal Climate Change Impacts Through Bivalve Shellfish." Don't miss out!

Ocean Friendly Valentine's Day

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, there are many things you can do even though we are still locked down in quarantine. Instead of romantic dinner reservation, why not order dinner from one of our favorite Ocean Friendly Restaurants. Not only are you supporting your local biz, you are also supporting Surfrider! And if the weather holds out, make it a picnic and don’t forget your reusable utensils. Roses are nice but let’s face it - they are wayyyyy overpriced and overdone at this time of year. So why not think about a plant that would be perfect in an Ocean Friendly Garden. It will last a longer than a bunch of cut flowers and add some great curb appeal. If your sentiments are better expressed in words, be sure to use cards that don’t have glitter or foil on them as these can be difficult to recycle. Same goes for those musical ones – be sure to remove the internal mechanism before putting it in the recycle bin. Avoid the balloon bouquets or add-ons – especially the mylar ones. They never go away. And if all else fails, give them a gift of ocean love in the form of a Surfrider membership.

Black History Month

As part of Surfrider’s commitment to justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion, the latest activist to be featured is GiGi Lucas, Founder and Executive Director at SurfearNEGRA. You can read more about this incredible woman by clicking here.

Executive Committee Updates

Welcome to Howard Slone as our new Treasurer! Is volunteering more on your 2021 resolution list? Thinking about stepping up your involvement in the Seattle Chapter? We are looking for people interested in filling our Secretary position. Don’t let the name deceive you – there is more than just note taking happening here! If you want more information, please email Drew Albenze, Seattle Chair, at chair@seattle.surfrider.org or Liz Schotman, Washington Regional Manager, at lschotman@surfrider.org.
